Junior Leagueof McAllen(Mission, TX) The Junior League of McAllen, Inc. (JLM) recently awarded a Community Assistance Grant to The S.A.F.E. Place at Mission Regional Medical Center, to enhance services to pediatric victims of sexual abuse and assault.

“Our mission, at Junior League of McAllen, is to meet critical needs of the community by collaborating with educational and charitable organizations that significantly improve the lives of children,” states Denise Garcia, president of JLM.  “We are delighted to support The S.A.F.E. Place at Mission Regional Medical Center, and believe our contribution will benefit each child receiving urgent care and advocacy at The S.A.F.E. Place.”

The S.A.F.E. Place is Hidalgo and Starr Counties’ only acute medical forensic unit open 24/7/365.  The unit is staffed by a certified Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner and equipped with a state-of-the-art Secure Digital Forensic Imaging Camera, for the collection of evidence and documentation of injuries. Victims of violence and abuse may be referred to the unit by agencies throughout Hidalgo and Starr Counties, or come in on their own through the hospital’s Emergency Department.

“When children arrive at The S.A.F.E. Place for examination, we strive to make them as comfortable as possible,” explains Marianna Treviño Wright, director of The Foundation at Mission Regional Medical Center.  “We are keenly aware of the trauma victims of violence may have experienced; therefore our goal is to treat every person with dignity. Thanks to the grant from Junior League of McAllen, we will be able to provide pediatric patients, who may be frightened, hurt and in distress, with a stuffed animal for comfort, as well as clean undergarments, to take with them when they leave the hospital.”

The S.A.F.E. Place is a special project of The Foundation at Mission Regional Medical Center, a nonprofit, 501 (c) (3) acute care hospital. To donate funds in support of this project, please visit www.thefoundationatmrmc.org.
