(Mission, TX) The Foundation at Mission Regional Medical Center is pleased to announce board certified physician, researcher, and instructor Maria Cabanillas, M.D., will be the keynote speaker at the 4th Annual ‘Ladies First’ Luncheon, to be held at Cimarron, Thursday, October 14.
“At last year’s luncheon, we surveyed the ladies in attendance and asked them what topics they would like to learn more about,” explains Marianna Treviño Wright, Director of The Foundation. “I don’t think anyone was surprised to see women want to learn more about hormones. These mysterious chemicals affect virtually every aspect of our health, from mood to metabolism, and may determine how well we look, feel, behave and age. These things are important to every woman!”
Dr. Cabanillas is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology, in addition to being a published researcher, and assistant professor in the Department of Endocrine Neoplasia and Hormonal Disorders at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Austin. Here, Dr. Cabanillas is working on the frontlines and Making Cancer History® by conducting clinical trials to find better ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer in children and adults.
Although thyroid cancer is on the rise, less is known about the environmental, dietary and other factors that may contribute to this increase. Other health problems related to thyroid health and hormone imbalances include weight gain, hair loss, shrinking bone density, diminished sex drive, dry skin, depression, fatigue and forgetfulness. Fortunately, simple tests have been developed to determine how well one’s thyroid is performing, and there are therapeutic programs for correcting dysfunction.
“Most of us know little about hormones and the thyroid, other than what we learned in high school Biology,” states Yvonne Salinas, President of The Foundation’s Board of Trustees. “But we hear so much about it in the news. What’s true and what’s hype? While the ‘Ladies First’ Luncheon cannot replace a visit to your doctor, it is a fun and informative way to find out more about an issue that will probably affect every woman, at one time or another. We are lucky to have Dr. Cabanillas lunch with us, and we look forward to learning more about how to safeguard our health.”
This annual, educational event is designed to bring awareness to women’s health issues and encourage women to make preventative health a priority. The 4th Annual ‘Ladies First’ Luncheon to benefit The Foundation at Mission Regional Medical Center is open to all. Tickets are $100 each. Tables are available for groups of ten (10), with preferred seating offered to sponsors.
