UTPA Students Organize S.A.F.E. ROXX! Benefit Concert

All Proceeds Will Go to The S.A.F.E. Place at MRMC
April 21, 2010

(Mission, TX)  If you are enrolled in Group Communications at UTPA, you will be assigned a fundraising project; then you have to decide what you want to do, and who will benefit…. This was a no-brainer for the “Diamond Dolls,” as these five young ladies came to be known to their class.

“This year, I secured a paid internship in office of The Foundation at Mission Regional Medical Center,” states Vanessa Escobedo, a sophomore at UTPA, and leader of the Diamond Dolls. “Here I learned about all the wonderful things the hospital does to help the community and how different it is from similar organizations.  I’ve really enjoyed my experience here and in December, we opened the Forensic Unit, also known as The S.A.F.E. Place at MRMC.  It’s the only unit of its kind open 24/7 to serve victims of sexual assault and abuse in Hidalgo and Starr Counties, by collecting the evidence necessary to help law enforcement do their job.

“When the class project was announced and declared due in April, I knew right away who I wanted to benefit,” continues Escobedo.  “Especially since April is Sexual Abuse Awareness Month.  I wanted to raise more money for The S.A.F.E. Place, to ensure the unit has the resources needed to fulfill its mission to treat victims of assault and abuse with dignity. Thankfully, the rest of the Dolls agreed!  That’s how S.A.F.E. ROXX was developed.”

The benefit concert, S.A.F.E. ROXX, will be held at JRow’s in McAllen, at the corner of Ware and Dove, on Saturday, April 24, 2010.  Tickets are $10 and will be available that night at JRow’s, or for advance purchase online at www.thefoundationatmrmc.org. Live performances by musical guests ‘Saints and Traitors’, ‘Draft’, ‘Faction Discord’, and ‘Jonestown Tragedy’ will begin after the doors open at 8pm.  Door prizes will be distributed throughout the night, and the Dolls will raffle off a 32” flat screen TV courtesy of Best Buy.

“Vanessa and her classmates are creative and courageous young women,” states Marianna Treviño Wright, Director of The Foundation at MRMC.  “They’ve chosen to shine the light on a terrible problem—one that certainly has a negative impact on the health and integrity of our community.  I think this class assignment is fantastic for so many reasons, not the least of which is expanding awareness of local nonprofits and the on-going needs we have. We are grateful to have been chosen by the Diamond Dolls, and appreciate the hard work of all the UTPA students working to improve the quality of life in the Rio Grande Valley through this project.”
