Bet you didn't know that Cervical Cancer has a color all it's own; and it's own symbol: the polka dot. I didn't either until I began researching the topic for this year's 'Ladies First' Luncheon. Our keynote speaker, Christine Baze, has taught me plenty. This artist, activist and cancer-survivor will be sharing her story in words and music Thursday, October 15, 2009, as part of her mission to "Save the Hooch". Christine is a contemporary who is unafraid to speak the truth about this type of cancer with wit, humor and compassion. I think she is courageous and can't wait to personally congratulate her for her work to bring this "secret" and "shameful" cancer to the forefront of modern consciousness. Most importantly, our daughters' generation is fortunate to have a vaccine against the human papilloma virus, the virus that causes cervical; so they may not have to suffer the potentially deadly effects of HPV. This is good news for our generation, as Trustees Cuquis Cerda and Nora Shah and I all have daughters we want to protect. We are hopeful; hence the "Charlie's Angels" pose to kick this cancer!
Christine says women can keep their cervix happy, healthy and smiling just by taking a few precautions and getting regular screenings. It's not that difficult to combat cervical cancer, if you know how. Please join us at the 3rd Annual 'Ladies First' Luncheon to benefit The Foundation at Mission Regional Medical Center. This event is always educational and inspiring--and this year, it promises to be fun, too!
