World Breastfeeding Week

August 03, 2009

World Breastfeeding WeekI am so happy breastfeeding now enjoys such popular support!  I chose to nurse all of my children for a variety of reasons such as bonding with baby, improved brain development, and increased immunity to allergens and disease; not to mention, a reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancer for me. Of course, one of the best benefits has to include the rapid postpartum weight loss!

But seriously, there is no substitute for breast milk or for the boost it gives to babies, especially premature ones.  Preemies are more likely to suffer from nutritional malapsorption syndromes, formula intolerance, immunologic deficiencies, and failure to thrive—all of which add challenges and potential complications to their fragile lives. For this reason,  the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Mission Regional Medical Center participates in the Mother's Milk Bank program.  The Milk Bank operates collection sites all over Texas, to screen donors and receive human milk, which is pooled and pasteurized to kill any viruses or bacteria. This milk is then tested to ensure its safety, and made available to premature and ill infants by physician's prescription.

At Mission Regional Medical Center, we believe in "Milk Power!"  That is why we make Mother Nature's most powerful prescription available to "our babies" in the NICU.
